Author Guidelines

The Journal of Global Theatre History accepts submissions of original scholarly articles in English at any time. It is published twice a year in March and October. Additional calls for papers may be published on the journal's website with an explicit deadline.

All submissions should be accompanied by an abstract of up to 150 words and a list of up to 5 keywords. Contributions should generally be between 5000 and 7000 words in length excluding endnotes, abstract, and keywords. Longer or shorter pieces of particular significance may be considered at the editors' discretion. Before formally submitting an article you should send an abstract of your proposed article to the General Editor. When ready to submit your work you will need to register at the journal's authors workflow and provide your name, contact, and affiliation. Please submit two electronic copies of your article. One should include your name, contact, and affiliation above the title, together with a brief biographical note of no more than 2-3 sentences at the bottom of the last page of your entry. The other copy should be anonymous for peer review. If your contribution is accepted for publication, you may choose to have an email link included for respondents to contact you.

Please ensure that the documents are formatted in Microsoft Word or RTF document file format. All submission should follow be formatted as follows: 

  • A4 paper
  • 1.15 spacing
  • Use a 12-point sans-serif font
  • Employ italics, rather than underlining
  • Where available, URLs for the references should be provided
  • Use double quotation marks for quotations. Long quotations over three lines in length should be indented from both margins without quotation marks and set apart from the main body of the text via a blank line above and below.

A stylesheet for Word will be provided that adheres to the above listed guidelines. Authors are recommended to use this stylesheet for their manuscript.

The Journal of Global Theater History uses the quotation system of the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed). For more information on this quotation system please refer to http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html.

We strongly encourage all authors to use bibliographic software like Endnote or Citavi for preparing their manuscript and ensuring maximum coherence with their references. Also note that Microsoft Word has a built-in bibliografic management functionality including the requirements of the Chicago style of quotation and citation. Authors are welcome to use this feature alternatively. 

All references should be provided in endnotes. If you intend to submit images with your article, please insert them in your text and, as well, send a separate file of images only, clearly marked. They should be provide in the JPG format with a screen resolution of 72dpi and under 100kb.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
